Design Concepts

Often times our clients approach us with an end product vision but haven’t yet developed a well defined way of achieving their goal. During the concepts phase we can propose multiple design approaches to successfully achieve your goals.

Design Development

At Johnson Design, developing a design includes fully understanding our client’s goals, thoughtful engineering design, detailed 3D computer modeling, computer simulations for predicting strength and performance, and well presented visual and written descriptions of the features and benefits of the design. Using today’s latest computer aided engineering techniques designs can be heavily refined before entering the prototype and testing phase saving development time and costs. Often times this phase will lead to the pursuit of patent protection of unique and relevant features.

Prototyping

Developing technology has advanced prototyping methods just as it has advanced engineering tools, materials science, communications, and many other aspects of the engineering field. With today’s available prototyping options such as Stereolithography, computer controlled machining (CNC), urethane castings, and short run “soft” tooling, prototypes can be created faster, at lower costs, and with greater quality than ever before.

Testing

Testing is an essential part of every design process. While computer simulations can, in many cases, reduce the time and costs involved in the testing phase, nothing can replace the valuable information gained from lab tests.

Along with a very well equipped hydraulics lab for testing fluid flow, Johnson Design is capable of a wide variety of fit and function testing. Using our model shop for building custom test fixtures and acquiring test results for analysis using LabVIEW we are able to gain a complete picture of a design’s performance.

Manufacturing Preparation

Preparing a design for manufacture includes the creation of detailed and toleranced drawings, picking appropriate manufacturing methods and materials, and finding reliable manufacturing resources. Industry contacts and relationships, along with attention to detail, are key ways Johnson Design prepares product designs for manufacture.
